Block 4: Haunted Memories
Who stays, who goes, who we refuse to forget

Piggy (7mins)
Interview With A Hero (15mins)
Goodbye Fishies (11mins)
The Water of the Womb (10mins)
Bringing His Spirit Home (14mins)

Characters and spaces are haunted by ghosts, memories and trauma in this block exploring the way the past never really leaves us. This block of films approaches questions relating to memory through diverse formal means. From hybridized docu-fiction, to more traditional documentary and fictional forms to formally experimental modes, these films are a showcase of the expansive capabilities of cinematic form even when approaching, at the heart, seemingly similar questions.

Programmer's note: This block is a real treat to the eye as there is some of the most astounding cinematography I’ve seen in short films, yet they are all truly formally distinct. The willingness to experiment shows that these are filmmakers considering the broad potential of the cinematic language. Not only are they interested in form though, there are some deeply affecting performances, and a true story that touches to the core of cultural preservation and the meaningful relationship First Nations people have to memory and place.
